Full Name
Dr. Sean Burke
Year of Birth
1962
Nationality
British
Profession
Hydrogeologist and Catchment Scientist
Range of Experience
Dr. Sean Burke’s expertise lies in surface water quality, hydrochemistry and resource protection through catchment management. His research interests have focused on the interdisciplinary catchment science that is needed to underpin catchment management for effective resource management. During 2008-10, Sean developed Demonstration Test Catchments [DTC], a major joint initiative between the Environment Agency and DEFRA. This is the keystone of Environment Agency work to support the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive, in maintaining a sustainable water resource within Europe. Along with DTCs, much of Sean’s recent work has focused on protecting water resources from agricultural pollution and the development of cost effective measures to reduce its impact. This work has involved working with partners in Denmark, Holland and Germany, bringing together multi-disciplinary teams to develop the tools necessary for holistic catchment management. Previous work undertaken by Sean has centred on qualitative and quantitative surface water and groundwater risk assessment in the UK, Europe and South America. Mine water rebound/chemistry and predictive mine water quality modelling has also been a focal point of his research and he is an established international expert in this area. Sean also has experience of working in developing countries advising regulators and governments on resource protection and regulation. He has published over 20 international papers, and lectures to students from across the world on the Integrated Catchment Management course at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Lancaster University.
