The last 18 years have been in the field of energy and environment including extensive work in renewable energy projects (tidal, wind, hydro and biomass) and other green energy projects, emission and air quality.

Though working primarily in the UK, Dr. Carless has undertaken renewable energy and energy efficiency projects in China, Vietnam, India, Ireland, Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Morocco and Ghana under programmes funded by EU, World Bank, Asian Development Bank and UK govt.

Currently Dr. Carless is running Southern Hydropower, a micro-hydro development business, and also project managing a biomass project supported by SEEDA.

  • 2008 – Present. Hydropower resource studies. Site evaluations. Feasibility studies. Abstraction negotiations with Environment Agency. Evaluating design options. Economic analysis.
  • 2008 Interim Chief Operating Officer of Biojoule Ltd – a renewable energy company. Responsible for day to day management of the company, including R&D programme, business development and commercialisation of IP, whilst the owner was engaged elsewhere. Preparing business plan ahead of major financing round.
  • 2007-2010 Project Manager SEEDA sponsored programme to install plant and develop the supply chain for wood pellets in Southeast England, for Biojoule Ltd. This project continues beyond above role.
  • 2006-2007 Interim Managing Director. Managed sales and operations in a small software and electronics company (Sandoe Acoustics Ltd) for 12 months whilst the owner was unable to undertake his normal functions due to external commitments. Also undertook technical design, procurement and production work on data acquisition systems. (Note: still a Director and Company Secretary of Sandoe Acoustics).
  • 2003-2005 Interim Manager. Advised and assisted a major government technical organisation prepare for operation in a new commercial regime (energy sector - UKAEA). Structured long term and near term work plans for environmental remediation, for public presentation. Commissioned and managed preparation of “glossy” literature. Redeveloped critical work procedures. Market research for aid funded and environment sectors.
