Dr. Jill Helen Crossman

Hydroecologist, specialising in data analysis, modelling and GIS techniques.

Dr. Crossman’s expertise lies in hydrology, ecology and applications of water quality modelling and GIS techniques. Her research interests lie in surface and groundwater flow pathways, and nutrient dynamics. Recently Dr. Crossman has looked at modelling the River Avon hydrology, water quality and ecology as well as the local variability in groundwater flow pathways of glacierised catchments in Alaska, with particular reference to how physicochemistry might control freshwater ecology. Jill is particularly concerned with the impacts of environmental change, such as land use change and climate change on water quality and ecology. She has used GIS and remote sensing to identify the extent of groundwater-fed stream habitats throughout Alaska. Jill is also interested in channel morphology, and has studied the effects of dams and reservoirs upon upstream and downstream river channels. In addition she has investigated alterations in groundwater flow pathways resulting from creation and subsequent blockage of peatland grips. Dr. Crossman has worked in a wide range of environments throughout the United Kingdom and USA. Jill has been a speaker at several conferences and meetings, including two international symposiums, and has received the Royal Geographic Society “30th International Symposium” Award (£500), and the North American Benthological Society “Presidents Travel Award” (£800).
