Background

British Waterways has an extensive network of canal reservoirs – many built in the heyday of canal operations in England. Whilst these provided the bulk of the manageable water resources of the canals there are concerns that they are not able to provide security of supply against a background of drier summers and increased canal use.

Scope of work by Water Resource Associates Ltd

WRA produced a daily inflow sequence for all 16 reservoirs forming part of the study. This was based in part on data provided earlier to the Environment Agency under a previous project using HYSIM. For this project HYSIM was re-calibrated to estimated reservoir inflows. In most cases the inflow data had to be derived from reservoir levels. As the outflow was not recorded, this data was usable available for winter and early spring when it could be assumed that the outflow was negligible.

Results

A long-term (1920 to present) inflow sequence was developed for all 16 reservoirs. These data were provided in the format required for an existing model of the reservoirs. BW also received a copy of HYSIM.
